- Peel the onions and cut the tops off, keeping the root intact. Cut vertical slices around each onion.
- Create a breading station with three bowls: one for seasoned flour, one for egg and buttermilk, and one for breadcrumbs.
- Dredge each onion in the flour mixture, then dip in the egg mixture, and finally roll in the breadcrumbs.
- Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes.
- Lightly spray the basket with cooking spray and place one coated onion inside. Spray the top lightly with cooking spray.
- Air fry the onion for 15–18 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Check halfway through.
- Remove from the air fryer, let it cool slightly, and serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
